The acanthus leaf was an important plant, both architecturally as well as medicinally.  The ancient Greeks used the natural symmetry of the plant to decorate columns.  So it is in early Greek architecture that we first see Acanthus make an appearance as a decorative element.  However, decoration was not it’s only benefit.  Acanthus also has known medicinal properties, and was used to relieve burns and to relieve stomach upsets.

With this history, is it any surprise that when Italy began operating their own textile mills in the 14th century the Acanthus leaf was one of the first Leit motifs to make the leap to textile design?  Acanthus was such an easy to replicate design, both architecturally and in textiles, that it was one of the first fabric designs Damask Raven offered.  The gold color offered here was readily and easily available through natural dye stuffs like saffron and the acanthus scroll motif was popular in Europe from the 14th century through Victorian eras.
